  1. On Positivity

As a young person in the 21st century I spend a fair amount of time on the internet and I think it is fair to say that the overwhelming mood of the online world is decidedly negative. Cynicism, pointless rage and general intolerance abound endlessly in every available space. Today, as I once again observed this, I began to think about the nature of positivity and how we, as creatures, deal with positive feelings.

I will mention at this point that I am not a psychologist or a person with any kind of training of that nature. This will not be a scientific journey but more an open-ended exploration, which I hope you, the reader(s) will feel free to engage with and respond to.

In a nutshell I believe that having a generally positive outlook on life is a fundamentally fantastic thing, but something that is often incredibly difficult to do. I also believe that we, as human beings CRAVE the company of people who are positive - which makes our relentless efforts to argue and spread hatred even more baffling.

Think about a person who smiles a lot. All the time. When you come across such a person you may think ‘hey, this person smiles all the time, that’s kind of weird’ - but that thought doesn’t stop you liking the person, in fact I think it makes you like them more. I love people who smile a lot. I wish I was one of them. People like that just light up every environment they enter and you can see the people they interact with just lapping it up like heroin – because positivity is sadly scarce and so we go crazy for it when it appears.

I’m not talking about some amazing act here – I’m talking about smiling. It’s just the act of putting on a happy face for the world. Maybe you aren’t feeling particularly happy? That’s fair. But why would that stop you smiling anyway? Smiling makes you feel good and the people around you too. Everyone wins.

It can be fun to be mean, or cynical. Who doesn’t love sarcasm? Or a good witty put-down? I can say I certainly do. But it’s a hollow kind of enjoyment we get from these things – a fleeting thrill that sours and fades. If I see someone put someone else down in a youtube comment it can sometimes be amusing. Here’s a question though: have you ever seen a genuinely nice youtube comment? One that is just pleasant? They are, admittedly, pretty rare, but stumbling across one of these produces a different sensation. It makes you feel good. It makes you feel good to see other people being positive. The poster feels good, the person who reads it feels good. Everyone wins.

At this point you’re probably thinking:

    a) wow, this is incredibly long

    and

    b) Ben, you’re getting sappy.

I understand both these points. It’s not about sappiness though. I’m not saying we should all paint on fake smiles and go run around a forest picking daisies and braiding each others hair (as dope as that sounds). All I’m saying is that positivity is EASY and ALWAYS WORKS. There is NO downside to trying to be happy. Being negative is something you have to DO. You have to go out of your way to be negative. All I’m saying is: don’t. There are millions of videos on youtube that I would probably think are terrible, but do I go and post horrible comments on every one? No. Partly because I have a life and partly because that’s just depressing as hell for everyone involved. It’s effort for no gain.

I’m going to end with a story that I feel sums this all up. One time, many years ago, I had to catch a train to get to school. I was running late and was worried that the train would not arrive on time. As I got to the platform I found I was already cursing the train company under my breath and pretty much EXPECTED things to go badly. Then the train arrived – perfectly on time. It took me a bit by surprise so I just shrugged it off and got on. Then I stopped myself. ‘Why is it’, I asked myself, ‘that when the train is late, I jump to negativity, but when the train is on time – a good thing – I just shrug it off’ ? I took a moment – and I know this may sound a little silly – I took a moment to be thankful and happy that the train was on time. Nothing crazy: I didn’t do a dance or deliver an Oscar-style speech thanking all the passengers. I just said to myself: ‘that was good, I’m pleased about that.’ And it made me feel good, because it was good.

Sometimes things go badly; that’s life. But sometimes things go well – and we should take the time to appreciate them. It is even easier to appreciate them if one comes at life with an attitude that things probably WILL go well. Because life sucks enough already, you don’t need to bring your own, separate negativity to the table. Smile it out. Everyone wins.
